The name "ld" happens to be quite generic and predates the GNU movement ([http://cm.bell-labs.com/cm/cs/who/dmr/man12.pdf Part 2, page 20, Unix Programmer's Manual November 3, 1971]). Also, most Unix-like systems have their own native linker, usually called ld. I just stumbled on this article and figured I could add a few things to improve it. I've done some editing to improve the encyclopedic tone and readability of the article. What needs to be added to make this a finished article on the subject?
