NUMA ("Non-Uniform Memory Access") is a hardware strategy used where some regions of memory may be faster for a given core to access. Modern operating systems can work to explicitly support NUMA optimizations, SGI's IRIX is a notable example of an operating system with extensive support for NUMA optimizations.
